Critical Thinking Task Week Three- ETHICS

“Our lives today demand that we face and respond to ethical dilemmas.”

Do you agree or disagree?

I agree with this statement.

Ethics are the morals that govern us, they make us think/act a certain way.

Every day we are given choices, whether we hop on a tram and touch on or not to whether we cheat or not in a game to even just eating or throwing out a piece of fruit. Our beliefs/morals help us choose our decisions.

The food waste trail I went on taught me how much food was getting wasted for the tiniest reasons and how we were extremely picky. Supermarkets like Coles threw out food that was close to reaching its best before date even though the food looked perfectly fine, why? because they know that consumers would not approve of it. Right there we already have an ethical situation. The consumers have the choice to either buy the food or not and the supermarkets have the choice of either sending it to companies that take it and feed it to people who need it or just throwing it away.

Many people are faced with ethical dilemmas that not only involve themselves but other people around them. For example people who commit crimes such as murder like Julian Knight have a choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing but because he made the wrong choice he lost his freedom and injured/killed many people. Lawyers and judges also have to face ethical dilemmas every day, whatever they do/say affects someone else’s life.

So are our lives really faced with ethical dilemmas every day? I think so because we have to make choices everyday which involve our beliefs.

Week Three Reflection

This week I went to Fitzroy Primary School for community service. When I first found out I was going to a primary school I wasn’t exactly pumped for it since I don’t really like little kids, but it turned out to be better than I expected it to be.

I also went on a food wastage trail on Wednesday which was the best. We learnt about how supermarkets and people in general threw away food that was perfectly in good condition, which was frankly quite surprising to me. We got the chance to make jam and chutney, where we then walked over to St Maries to give them the food.

On Friday I went on the team projects mini trail. Our group gained a lot of information and the day went smoothly, which was great.

Overall week three has been the best week for me.

Critical Thinking Task Week Two- COMMUNITIES

A sense of connection is the most important aspect of a community.”

Do you agree or disagree?

I agree with this statement.

The word community is defined as ‘a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common’. The word connection is defined as ‘a relationship in which a person or thing is linked or associated with something else’. Both definitions of the words are linked to the word common. So basically for there to be a community they need to have something in common which is the connection.

Firstly, without a connection there is no community. Honestly would you rather be with someone who shares a similar interest or be with someone who doesn’t care at all. Without a connection a community won’t have any gatherings due to lack of interest in each other. After surveying different people on the streets of Brunswick all have agreed that it is important to feel connected to a community.

Secondly, without a sense of connection members in the community will feel excluded and are less likely to help out in community issues. One shopkeeper stated that helping young children out made him feel closer to his community. Also drawing from past experiences even friendships don’t last if you feel excluded and have no connection with the other person.

Finally, what could possibly be more important than a sense of connection? The first people in Melbourne managed to survive by staying together with their own community and working together when the first ‘white’ men came to their land. If they hadn’t worked together they possibly wouldn’t have survived.

A sense of connection is most definitely the most important aspect in a community as it brings people with something in common together where we can all help each other out to survive this day in age.

Week Two Reflection

I enjoyed this week much more than last week. The three trails we went on this week were fun and educational at the same time. The first one was the Hoddle Waddle trail where I learned more about the city streets and had the chance to work with my new team project group (after moving from music to photography) who were extremely nice and welcoming. Wednesday’s trail was split into three groups and I was headed off to Brunswick. From there I learnt about the areas history and how councils put in certain attractions to bring the community together. I also managed to talk to new people which was good since I tend to avoid people rather than engage them in a conversation. The last trail we went on was a trip to the Melbourne Museum, where we learnt about the Aboriginal culture and how they looked after themselves and also their community.

Overall, this week was extremely educational and interesting.

Week One Reflection

Holidays were over and school was back and what better way was there than to start the new school year fresh with Galileo.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Galileo since I hadn’t really heard much about it but everything changed when I met the Galileo teachers for the first time. Their enthusiasm caught on to me and soon I was pretty excited.

Within the first week we went on our first trail around the city, which I was pretty pumped about since it sounded good. By the end of the day though my enthusiasm had dropped and I walked away from it exhausted.

Despite this outcome, I am still looking forward to continuing Galileo and learning new skills and experiencing new things for the first time.

Learning Goals

Skills
Cold calling/Small talk- These two skills are somewhat similar. I am extremely shy and find it very hard to communicate with people I have never met before, therefore I would like to gain the confidence to do so.
Public speaking- When I talk in front of a crowd I feel like I’m being put under pressure so I talk extremely fast and turn bright red. I’d like to not do those things and go out without feeling like I’m under pressure.

Knowledge
Melbourne streets- Knowing your way around Melbourne and the attractions on certain streets is extremely important and will be something I would like to know more about since I’m not very well-educated about Melbourne.
Street art- I love street art as I see it in many alleyways in the Melbourne CBD so I would like to further explore into this.
Philosophy and values- I think philosophy is something that intrigues me and I’d like to know more about it.

Personal Qualities
Courage/Confidence/Strong self esteem- I think the three personal qualities I chose are all somewhat linked into one another. Without strong self-esteem I wouldn’t be confident and without a strong self-esteem or confidence I wouldn’t have the courage to do things. I lack all these three qualities so I think I should improve on them.
